Nobody at LampHouse drinks coffee. So, we thought it was a little ironic when we were approached to help create an animation titled #CoffeeTalk. This film is the first in a series called #Gospel from creator Daniel Rice, who’s also writing a book by the same name. The goal of #Gospel is to highlight principles from the book of Romans – for a new generation. Daniel masterfully communicates deep theological truths, in increasingly fun and engaging ways. His passion is evident, and we’re proud to partner with him to communicate these truths from God’s Word!
We really love animation, and often collaborate with graphic design studios to bring their creations to life! For this project, we worked with one of our favorite and most frequent collaborators – The Infantree. They’re an incredible branding and design company in Lancaster, PA, and they’re just great people to work with! Here’s some of the storyboard concepts they provided:
The challenge was to take The Infantree’s illustrations, and bring them to life! The very first scene involves coffee cups popping up all over the globe. We loved the flat illustration style, but we knew immediately this needed an extra dimension… literally. We re-created some of the coffee cup illustrations in 3D, and arranged them around a spherical globe. Despite the 3D nature of the scene, we still wanted it to match the flat aesthetic of all the other illustrations. We turned off all shading and anything else that indicated depth. The result was a flat illustration, that could be fully animated in 3D space. Instead of just viewing the coffee cups from the side, we can now rotate around the top or the sides of each cup. I think the result added so much more to the scene!
The final film debuted to a crowd of thousands at Calvary Church in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, one of the area’s largest churches. #CoffeeTalk is only the first chapter in the #Gospel series. Daniel is currently finishing the book, and building the #Gospel brand. Here’s what he had to say about working with LampHouse Films:
I had a great experience working with Michael and Josh. They were both extremely professional and willing to go to great lengths to bring to life our project’s concepts and ideas. With attention to detail, and an overall quality that is hard to find, LampHouse Films takes animation to the next level. Move over Pixar.
Thanks, Daniel! We’re excited to continue on in the series, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the subject matter. Here’s to many more!
